Samsung Recalls Millions of Washers Whose Tops Can Detach Mid-Use
Samsung is recalling about 2.8 million top-loading washers whose tops can unexpectedly detach from the chassis during use. According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, the recall involved 34 models of Samsung washing machines with mid-controls or rear-controls. The company has received more than 700 reports of washing machines experiencing excessive vibration or the top detaching while the machine was still in use. There are nine related reports of injuries including a broken jaw and an injured shoulder, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Recall Details
The washing machines involved in the recall were sold at major retailers such as Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowes and Sears between March 2011 and November 2016 for between $450 and $1,500. Consumers are urged to check their machines’ model numbers and serial information on two labels on the backs of the machines to determine if they are part of this recall.
Consumers have the option of getting a free in-home repair and a one-year extension of the manufacturer’s warranty or getting a rebate toward the purchase of a new Samsung or other brand washing machine. This will also include free installation of the new unit and removal of the old unit. Consumers could also opt for a full refund if they purchased the washing machines within the past 30 days of this recall announcement. If you have one of these washing machines at home use only the delicate or waterproof cycles, especially when washing bedding or other bulky items.
Product Liability Lawsuits
When a product causes injuries to consumers while they are using it as it was intended to be used, a product liability claim could be filed against the manufacturer of the defective product. If you have suffered injuries that required medical care or hospitalization, you may be able to seek compensation from the product manufacturer for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
Injured victims would be well advised to preserve the product so it can be thoroughly examined by an expert for evidence of defects and malfunctions. It would also be in your best interest to contact a renowned product defect law firm whose attorneys have the experience, knowledge and resources to handle cases similar to yours.
