Salmonella In Sushi Linked To Outbreaks In CA, NM, and AZ
The New Mexico Department of Health, the city of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department and the New Mexico Environment Department have launched an investigation into many illnesses caused in the state by Salmonella paratyphi.
According to a news report in WTexas.com, six New Mexico residents have been infected with the bacteria and of the six cases, five reported eating sushi containing raw fish.
Outbreaks Linked to Raw Fish
Last month, a similar outbreak of Salmonella paratyphi was reported by the Ventura County Public Health Department.
So far, Southern California has reported 18 cases with one case in Santa Barbara County and four in Ventura County.
Seven other cases were reported by out-of-state residents who had traveled to Southern California. More than 80 percent of the affected victims had consumed sushi.
Officials have linked these outbreaks to raw tuna imported from Indonesia.
In Maricopa County, Arizona, there have been nine cases so far between April 3 and April 16. Of these affected individuals, three were hospitalized.
Maricopa County health officials said the cause of a Salmonella outbreak could be attributable to raw ground tuna in sushi rolls and other sushi dishes.
Salmonella Infections
These illnesses typically last between four and seven days. Although most individuals recover without treatment, some people may have to be hospitalized.
Salmonella is not common in raw fish, but consumption of raw or undercooked meats and seafood can cause foodborne illnesses including salmonella.
The elderly, children and those with compromised immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness associated with salmonella.
The best way to prevent these illnesses is by proper hand washing and cooking foods to an internal temperature of 165°F.
Seeking Compensation
Those who have suffered severe symptoms due to food poisoning can seek compensation for the losses they have sustained.
Injured victims can seek compensation from at-fault parties for medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
In food poisoning cases, liable entities may include restaurants, retail outlets or distributors of the tainted product.
Food producers, distributors and eateries have a responsibility to ensure that the food they distribute, produce or serve are safe for consumers.
An experienced California food poisoning lawyer can help affected victims and their families better understand their legal rights and options in such cases.
