Salami Pepperoni and Chorizo Recalled for Listeria Contamination
About 3,900 pounds of salami, pepperoni and chorizo have been recalled across the United States and Canada due to potential listeria contamination. According to a report in the Daily Hornet, Olli Salumeria Americana’s recalled products sold under the brands Gusto and Olli, boast that they are free of hormones, antibiotics and gluten. However, as it turned out, thousands of pounds of the company’s processed meat were tainted with listeria, as routine testing by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency discovered.
When listeria or salmonella are found in a finished product, all products manufactured in the same place and time might be contaminated. So, the meat sold at retail locations across the United States and Canada, including Whole Foods, has been recalled. Anyone who has these products at home is asked to toss them out or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
What is Listeria and What Are Its Symptoms?
Listeriosis is a serious bacterial infection that is caused by consuming food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. About 1,600 people get listeriosis each year and 260 die from these infections. Listeriosis is most likely to sicken pregnant women, newborns, adults 65 and older, and individuals with weakened or compromised immune systems. Unlike other pathogens, listeria could grow even in cold temperatures, such as inside a refrigerator. It can only be killed by cooking and pasteurization.
Some of the common symptoms of listeria include diarrhea and stomach ache. If it spreads to the nervous system, individuals may experience symptoms such as headaches, stiff neck, loss of balance, confusion or even seizures. Infected pregnant women may experience only mild flu-like symptoms. However, such an infection during pregnancy could also lead to serious consequences such as miscarriage or stillbirth. Pregnant women are about 20 times more likely than other adults to get listeriosis.
If You’ve Suffered from Food Poisoning
If you or a loved one has suffered from listeria poisoning or some other type of food-borne illness, it is important that you get medical attention right away. Insist on getting tested for food-borne illnesses. If you have leftovers of the food that sickened you, isolate and preserve it carefully so it can be tested for the presence of pathogens. Report your illness to the local healthcare agency, which documents and tracks these types of incidents. Contact an experienced California food poisoning lawyer who can help you receive compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
