Pita Pal Issues Massive Hummus Recall Over Listeria Concerns
Pita Pal Foods has issued a product defect recall for 87 types of hummus products because of worries over potential food poisoning concerns and listeria contamination. According to a CNN news report, the recalled hummus products were made between May 30 and June 25 before they were distributed nationwide and to the United Arab Emirates.
An inspection by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified listeria bacteria. The bacteria were not found in any of the finished hummus products and so far, no illnesses have been reported. Those who purchased a recalled Pita Pal product can return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Why is Listeria Dangerous?
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1,600 people are affected by listeriosis each year about 260 die. Listeria bacteria can cause serious illnesses in young children, frail or elderly people, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems. In pregnant women, listeria could cause miscarriages or stillbirths. Some of the common symptoms of listerioris include high fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
These symptoms may begin a few days after you’ve eaten the contaminated food, but it may take as long as 30 days or more before the first signs and symptoms of the infection begin. If the listeria infection spreads to your nervous system, you may also experience symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion or changes in alertness, loss of balance and convulsions.
Steps You Can Take
If you have developed a listeria infection as the result of a food product contaminated by the bacteria, make sure you isolate the left over food so no one else in your household consumes it. It is important that you get prompt medical attention, treatment and care for your illness, and follow the doctor’s orders for treatment and care.
If you are diagnosed with listeriosis, have the leftover food tested independently in a laboratory to check for the presence of pathogens. Report your illness to your local health care agency, which tends to track trends in food-borne illnesses. Contact an experienced food poisoning lawyer who can help you secure compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
