Officials Seek Public’s Help in Finding Driver Who Caused Fatal Hit-and-Run
Authorities have released information about a vehicle of interest in connection with a hit-and-run crash in San Bernardino, which gravely injured 2-year-old Asianae Thomas. According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, the little was playing outside a relative’s home in the 2400 block of North Mountain Avenue the evening of May 4, 2014 when a pickup truck struck her and fled the scene.
Tragic Collision
Detectives have released a photo of a dark-colored flatbed truck that was taken off a security camera at a local convenience store just south of where the crash occurred. Officials say the camera shows the vehicle, which has a unique service bed, turned north just one minute before police started getting 911 calls.
The child’s family members said they ran after the truck. But the driver did not stop even though he had the time to do so. Asianae is on life support at a local hospital. Her mother has called out for the driver to turn himself in. Anyone who wishes to donate money to help the girl and her family is asked to send a check in her name to the Central Neighborhood Health Foundation at 2707 S. Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90011.
Leaving the Scene of the Crash
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the truck hit the little girl who was playing and then fled the scene without even stopping. Appalling! Not only leaving the scene of a crash inhumane and irresponsible, but it is also illegal. Under California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a), motorists who are involved in an accident are required to stop immediately at the scene and remain there until officials arrive. Drivers are also required to exchange pertinent information and most importantly, render aid to the injured victim.
