Nissan Vehicles Recalled for Airbag Defects
Nissan has issued vehicle defect recalls for more than 54,000 vehicles due to defective airbags. According to a CBS news report, the recall affects 2012 Nissan Versa vehicles where curtain and seat-mounted airbags may unexpectedly deploy when the door is slammed shut. Nissan North America says the problem may be caused by the degradation of the side impact sensor connector pins. The unexpected deployment of the airbags can increase the risk of injury.
When the recall begins, dealers will install a new jumper harness and replace the side impact sensors free of charge. Car owners can contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s hotline at 1-88-327-4236. You can also visit safercar.gov to see if your vehicle has been included in the recall by entering your vehicle identification number of VIN. So far, no accidents, injuries or fatalities have been reported as a result of these recalled vehicles.
Vehicle Recall Statistics
U.S. automakers in 2016 set a record by recalling 53.2 million vehicles for a number of different safety defects. Last year featured the most recalls of any single year surpassing the previous all-time high of 51.1 million set just one year before, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. What’s more distressing is that there are roughly 63 million recalled vehicles that have yet to be repaired. During the final year of the Obama administration, a record-setting 927 recall campaigns were launched, a 7 percent increase from the year before.
Dangerous and Defective Vehicles
Airbag defects have been front and center in the safety recall arena over the last couple of years. More than 30 million vehicles so far have been recalled over defective Takata airbag inflators that could spray shrapnel into the vehicle compartment injuring or even killing people. The Nissan airbag recall involves a different problem with the airbags. However, when airbags deploy suddenly and without warning, they could cause serious injuries as well. Those hit by airbags could sustain facial injuries, broken bones and even internal injuries due to the force with which an airbag deploys.
If you or a loved one has been injured as the result of a faulty airbag, you may be able to seek compensation for your injuries and damages. Injured victims can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, rehabilitation, pain and suffering and emotional distress. An experienced auto defect law firm will be able to fight for your rights and help hold the negligent automaker accountable.
