Nestle Recalls Drumstick Ice Cream Cones for Listeria Contamination
Nestle has launched a nationwide recall of some of its Drumstick ice cream cones after getting positive tests for listeria in a California factory where the products are made. According to a KTLA news report, so far, no one has been reported stops and none of the Drumstick products have actually tested positive for the bacteria. The company apparently got positive test results for listeria on its equipment located on a production line at its facility in Bakersfield.
The voluntary recall includes the Drumstick Club 16 count Variety Pack and the 24 count Vanilla Pack, which were made between August 31 and September 17. Nestle said it discovered the problem through its internal testing but that the products were inadvertently shipped to stores due to an error while logging receipt of the test results. The company has urged customers not to eat the ice cream and to return them to the store where they were purchased or contact Nestle Consumer Services.
Not Similar to Blue Bell Recall
Nestle stated that while its recall involved listeria and ice cream, it bears no similarities to the Blue Bell ice cream recall case that resulted in the hospitalization of 10 people in four states and the deaths of three others. Nestle says it has not received reports of human illnesses, hasn’t found the presence of listeria in the ice cream itself and that they have only one product line and facility affected by the pathogen.
Listeria can result in serious or even fatal health issues, particularly among young children, the elderly and those with weak immune systems. Symptoms of an infection include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria could also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. In the U.S., about 1,600 people become seriously ill with listeria each year and about 16 percent of these cases result in death.
What Can Consumers Do?
If you have one of these products at home, return it to the store for a refund or contact the customer service department at Nestle for more information. If this or any other contaminated food product has sickened you, be sure to get prompt medical attention, treatment and care.
