Millions of Sippy Cups Recalled for Mold Hazard
Mayborn USA has issued a defective product recall for 3.1 million Tommee Tippee Sippee children’s spill-proof cups because of mold issues that have made at least 68 children sick. According to a CNN news report, five types of 7- and 10-ounce cups are affected including First Sips Transition cups, Trainer Sippee cups, Sippee cups, Sportee bottles and Insulated Swiggle/Sippee tumblers. The cups are made for children between 4 and 12 months old.
Reports of Illnesses
According to the manufacturer, the mold developed on the cup’s removable, one-piece, white valve inside the spill-proof cups, when it remained wet or moist and was not frequently cleaned. The company has, so far, received more than 3,000 consumer reports of mold in the valves including 68 reports of illnesses consistent with drinking from a cup with mold such as vomiting and diarrhea.
In February, parents who discovered mold in the cups got on social media and started posting pictures of the moldy cups on the Tommee Tippee Facebook page. The recalled cups were sold between December 2014 and May 2016 in the U.S. and Canada. Consumers are urged to stop using cups that have a one-piece white valve. The company will replace the recalled cups at no cost to consumers.
