Understanding Listeriosis
Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogenic bacteria that causes the infection known as listeriosis. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that each year 1,600 people are infected by listeriosis and about 260 people die from the illness. Some of the most common symptoms of this illness include fevers, headaches, stiffness, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
While the illness resolves itself within a few days in most healthy individuals, it could prove fatal for some. Pregnant women and their newborns, adults over the age of 65 and also people with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women in particular face the risk of passing the infection on to the fetus, which could result in stillbirths or miscarriages.
If You Have Been Affected
If you or a loved one has been sickened by contaminated food products, there are a number of steps you can take to protect your rights. First, make sure you get prompt medical attention, treatment and care for your illnesses. Ask that your medical provider run a diagnostic test for food poisoning. Report your illness to your local healthcare agency. If you have any of the contaminated food left at home, make sure you isolate and preserve it so it can be tested independently in a laboratory for the presence of pathogens.
You may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit against the manufacturer of the contaminated food, the retailer, an establishment that served the food, or other potential parties. Contact an experienced California food poisoning lawyer who will be able to preserve your rights and hold the at-fault parties liable.
