Man Suffers Broken Legs in Santa Ana Hit and Run Crash
A man suffered two broken legs in a Santa Ana hit and run accident late on June 7th. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the incident occurred at the intersection of Bristol Street and Edinger Avenue. The victim was on a crosswalk when a vehicle headed south on Bristol struck him. He was transported to an area hospital where he is expected to survive. The driver fled the scene of the crash. Investigators found a piece of a vehicle at the crash scene and were planning to check surveillance video from nearby businesses, officials said.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the injured victim of this hit and run crash. We wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Leaving the Scene of a Crash
Based on this news report, it appears that the pedestrian was legally crossing the street in a marked crosswalk when he was struck. Under California Vehicle Code 21950 (a), the driver was required to stop and yield the right of way to pedestrians. The driver also had the responsibility to stop and assist the injured pedestrian who had apparently broken both legs.
Failure to stop immediately and remain at the scene of an injury or fatal crash is a violation of California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a), which requires motorists involved in accidents to stop and remain at the scene, exchange pertinent information with other parties involved and most importantly, get help for the injured victims. This could be something as simple as calling 911.
Justice for Victims
Injured hit and run victims suffer significantly because they are faced with unforeseen expenses such as medical costs, lost income, etc. When the hit-and-run driver is not identified or found, they don’t have anyone to hold accountable for these losses and that is often challenging physically, emotionally and financially for victims.
We certainly hope that the hit-and-run driver in this case is found and brought to justice. In such cases, injured victims may have different sources of compensation including their own uninsured motorist auto insurance policy. Victims or families would be well advised to contact an experienced Santa Ana car accident attorney who will stay on top of the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
