LAPD Searches for Hit-and-Run Driver Who Killed Father of Three
Police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who they say struck and killed a father of three who was celebrating his 1-year-old daughter’s baptism the night of November 11, 2017. According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, Alex Fernandez was struck at the corner of 43rd Street and Vermont Avenue. Witnesses say the car was traveling at least 70 mph when it ran the red light and hit Fernandez. The man was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
Family members said Fernandez was celebrating with his family that night when he stepped out to get ice. He didn’t make it home. Neighbors say a crosswalk was added at the intersection where Fernandez was struck. They had hoped it would slow drivers down, but that hasn’t been the case. Police are still looking for the hit-and-run driver. The investigation is ongoing.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family members of Alex Fernandez for their tragic loss. Family members told CBS he worked hard to support the family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
LA Hit and Run Crashes
A recent NBC4 investigation shows that one hit-and-run crash occurs every 18 minutes in Los Angeles. More than 28,000 reported hit-and-crashes during the year 2015 occurred over a widespread area of Los Angeles County. About 50 percent of all car accidents in Los Angeles County are hit-and-run cases. By comparison, the national average is 11 percent, according to the American Automobile Association. Los Angeles has notoriously earned the reputation for being the “hit-and-run capital” of the nation. The number of hit-and-run crashes in the region, over the last few years, has risen to epidemic proportions.
Laws and Liability Issues
Leaving the scene of an injury or fatal crash is a felony crime under California law. Under California Vehicle Code 20001 (a), motorists are required to stop immediately at the scene of a crash and remain until authorities arrive. Drivers are also required to exchange pertinent information with other parties and most importantly, offer assistance to the injured victims.
Hit-and-run victims or families of those killed in hit-and-run crashes may be able to seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of their auto insurance policies. In addition, they may also be able to seek compensation from the at-fault driver. An experienced Los Angeles car accident lawyer will be able to advise victims and their families regarding their legal rights and options.
