Kia Sorento Vehicles Recalled For Rollaway Problem
Kia Motors America is recalling more than 377,000 Sorento crossovers from the 2011, 2012 and 2013 model years.
According to a report in The Car Connection, some of those vehicles suffer from a manufacturing defect that could cause them to roll away.
The faulty component in question is a brake-shift interlock manufactured by SL Tennessee. If drivers use excessive force on the Sorento’s gearshift lever, the interlock can crack or chip.
If that happens, the interlock will not work as intended, allowing the vehicle to be shifted out of “park” without depressing the brakes.
Potential to Cause Injuries
If the vehicle is parked on an incline when that occurs, it may roll posing risk of injury to passengers, bystanders or other vehicles.
The recall affects 2011-2013 Kia Sorento vehicles manufactured between October 19, 2009 and January 31, 2013. About 377,062 vehicles in the United States are included in the recall. So far, the automaker has received a total of 54 warranty claims related to the issue as well as 14 customer complaints.
Three injuries may be linked to the problem. In one case, the vehicle owner alleges that the Sorento hit his son resulting in a broken leg. Kia will mail recall notices to owners in late November. Once the recall begins, owners will be able to take their vehicles to Kia dealers who will then replace the brake-shift interlock mechanisms on their vehicles at no charge.

If you own one of these vehicles, it is important that you take it to a dealer or mechanic for a complete inspection. Automakers who recall vehicles for safety defects are required under the law to do the repairs at no cost to consumers.
