Kelley Blue Book Reveals Disturbing Facts about Distracted Drivers

Kelley Blue Book has released the results of a distracted driving survey, which shows that a majority of drivers are still multi-tasking behind the wheel despite knowing and understanding the risks of doing so. The company that provides information about vehicle valuation did the survey as part of its #DriveSmart campaign launched during Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The national survey reveals the following:

Nearly half (about 47 percent) of the respondents have used their phones while driving on roads or residential streets.

40 percent have used their phones while driving on the highway.

86 percent have used their phone while at a stop light or in heavy traffic.

Talking on the phone and using the navigation system were the highest rated activities reported with 78 percent and 71 percent respectively.

Texting came in third with 67 percent followed by using music apps (47 percent) and using social media (31 percent).

The Dangers of Distracted Driving

There is no question that cell phones are the biggest distractions for drivers today. But that’s not the only in-car technology that is causing drivers to take their eyes off the road. In-dash navigation, music apps, voice command call or text are some other features that distract drivers. Recent studies have found that even hands-free technology is distracting to drivers.

In addition, there are other forms of distraction such as eating, drinking, reading, grooming, applying makeup, etc. Any form of distraction significantly increases the risk of a crash. And anything that causes you to take your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel or attention away from the act of driving, amounts to a distraction.
