Infant and Toddler Swings Recalled for Fall Hazards

Some baby and toddler swings have been recalled because the swing rope can detach and pose a fall hazard. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), about 3,000 units of the Swurfer Kiwi Baby and Toddler Swings have been recalled because of the stopper on the bottom of the swing rope that holds the seat in place can detach. This can cause children to fall off the swings.

Details of the Recall

The recalled swings were sold in green, blue and pink and attach to a swing set or a tree branch. The swing measures about 15 inches wide by 10 inches deep and 20 inches high, and weighs about 4 pounds. Flybar Inc. and Kiwi Swing SSW-0005 are printed on the underside of the swing. The manufacture date code of August 2019 is embossed on the back of the swing.

The products were sold online at Swurfer.com, Flybar.com, Amazon.com, Walmart.com, and at independent stores nationwide from October 2019 through March 2020 for about $80. The CPSC said consumers should immediately stop using the recalled swings and contact the firm to receive instructions to repair them. Consumers should contact Swurfer toll-free at 1-800-764-6784. So far, the company has received six reports of the rope detaching. No injuries have been reported.

The CPSC has said that some of the remedies mentioned in the recall may not be available at this time because of the coronavirus pandemic. Consumers are urged not to use recalled products and to check with the company for more information.

CPSC’s statistics show that in 2018, there were an estimated 59,000 emergency department-treated injuries associated with nursery products among children under the age of 5. This translates to an injury rate of about 298 per 100,000 children under 5. High chairs, strollers, cribs/mattresses and infant carriers were associated with 66% of the total estimated injuries. Falls were the leading cause of injury and the head, followed by the face, was the body part injured most frequently.
