IKEA Recalls 840,000 Ceiling Lamps for Shades that Could Break
IKEA is recalling 840,000 ceiling lamps for shades that could rain glass from above and cause injuries. According to a report on Consumerist.com, the major international retailer is recalling two different models of ceiling lamps over concerns that they could come apart and cause injuries to those below.
The lamps included in the recall were sold in the United States and Canada after customers complained that the shades of some “LOCK” and “HYBY” lamps had fallen and caused injuries.
Reports of Injuries
The problem apparently is with the retaining clips that secure glass shades to the lamp housings. They can break, sending the glass shades hurtling toward the ground posing laceration hazards. So far, IKEA has received 224 reports of incidents worldwide including 11 with injuries.
However, none of these injuries were reported in the United States. IKEA has been selling HYBY lamps in stores worldwide and online since October 2012 and the LOCK lamps since November 2002. The company urges consumers to immediately stop using the recalled lamps, uninstall them and return them to any IKEA store for a full refund. For more information, call IKEA at 1-888-966-4532.
Dangerous Defects and Liability
These are clearly dangerous and defective products, which pose the danger of serious injuries. In addition to lacerations, these lampshades may also cause concussions or other head injuries. If you have suffered injuries as the result of a defective product, it is important to preserve the product so it can be examined for faulty design and/or manufacturing.
Injured victims of defective products can file what are known as product liability claims against manufacturers. In order to prove such a claim, plaintiffs must show that the product was defective; that it caused their injuries; and that they suffered losses as a result. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
Family members of a deceased victim can file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation as well. An experienced product liability attorney will be able to advice injured victims or their families regarding their legal rights and options. The best product defect law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive case evaluation to injured victims and their families.
