Honda Recalls Motorcycles with Defective Takata Airbags
Honda’s 2006 Gold Wing Airbag touring bike was the first motorcycle to feature an airbag. But, according to a Fox News report, 2,700 of these motorcycles have been added to millions of vehicles Honda has recalled to replace potentially dangerous Takata airbags. The airbag inflators in these airbags cause ruptures that have been linked to at least 10 deaths and many more injuries. Honda says, so far, no ruptures have been reported in motorcycles.
Owners of the affected 2006-2010 models will be notified about the recall in 60 days, but replacement parts and repairs are not expected to be available until the fall. Honda started developing its motorcycle airbag system way back in 1990. The single airbag units in the recalled motorcycles are designed to deploy in the event of a severe head-on crash. The current Gold Wing Airbag motorcycles sell for $30,599 or more each.
Biggest Recall in U.S. History
Takata’s deadly airbag crisis has ballooned into the largest recall in U.S. history. The company has already recalled about 75 million airbag inflators and is still struggling to repair and replace these defective inflators. So far, 10 people have died and many others have been injured by these airbags. The airbag inflators have the chemical ammonium nitrate, which is used in fertilizer.
The airbags explode with such force that they send shards of metal flying into the vehicle compartment. People have been seriously injured or killed by these sharp projectiles. Law enforcement officials who investigated these fatal or injury incidents said the victims’ wounds looked as if they had been stabbed.
