Honda Recalls 18,000 Vehicles for Possible Fuel Tank Leaks
Honda Motor Company has issued an auto defect recall for more than 18,000 of its 2011 Civic model vehicles over concerns that the fuel tank could leak in a rollover crash. According to a report in Detroit News, the Japanese auto maker has also stopped the sales of some of the Civic models. Honda officials say the recall is to inspect and replace a part, which could “fail to prevent fuel from leaking out of the fuel tank into the evaporative emissions canister” in the event of a rollover. The fuel pump module in these vehicles has a rollover valve. But a manufacturing defect caused by improper welding of the plastic case may cause it to break or crack.
Sales of Some Models Halted
Honda went as far as to halt the sale of some Civic vehicles this week because the vehicles on dealer lots had not been repaired. A stop sale will remain in effect for 2011 four-door and two-door Civic models, which were manufactured at the company’s Canada and Indiana plants. Honda has also warned dealers that if they sold a vehicle on the “stop sale list” the dealer will be solely responsible for injuries or deaths caused as a result. When the recall begins, dealers will remove and inspect the fuel tank unit and replace it if the rollover valve case is cracked. So far, the auto maker has not receive any complaints or reports of car accidents or injuries as a result of this vehicle defect.
