List and Methodology

The cars that made it to the top 5 for most recalled were Mercedes Benz C-Class, GMC Sierra, BMW 3 and 4 series, Dodge Durango and Nissan Pathfinder. Topping the list of least recalled vehicles were the Hyundai Accent, Chevy Equinox, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Honda CR-V. So, how did iSeeCars get this data?

They basically collected recall data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s databases as of May 1, 2018. Recall rates were calculated as the number of vehicle recall campaigns for each model in the database from model years 2013-2017 divided by the age of the model and the model’s new unit sales. However, it is important to remember that recalls are only one measure of overall vehicle quality.

What Makes a Car Safe?

The fact that a vehicle has been recalled many times or hasn’t been recalled is not exactly an accurate measure of safety. When you buy a vehicle, it is important to look at crashworthiness. That essentially means that the vehicle must be able to reasonably withstand the forces of a crash. There are a number of questions to ask. How strong is the roof? When it comes to recalls, it is important to remember that not all manufacturers are honest about issuing recalls in a timely manner.
