General Motors Recalls Cobalt Cars For Airbag Issues
General Motors has announced that it will recall 73,000 2010 Chevy Cobalt sedans because of improper wiring that could prevent an airbag from deploying during a crash.
According to a Detroit News report, GM said the new recall is not related to the 2014 recall of 2.6 million vehicles, including the 2005-2010 Cobalt, for ignition switch defects linked to nearly 400 deaths and injuries.
The recent recall includes about 60,000 Cobalt cars in the United States and 13,000 in Canada.
In that recall, the defective ignition switches in the off or accessory mode could result in airbags failing to deploy in a frontal crash.
Problem with the Wiring
GM has said the new recall issue is related to the sensor wire harness routing in the left front door.
When this wiring is improperly routed, the window regulator could come in contact with the harness when the window is fully lowered causing the harness insulation to be chafed.
This could result in a short circuit preventing the driver side of roof rail airbag from deploying during a crash. GM said the warning light would display that the airbag was malfunctioning before a crash.
When the recall begins, dealers will inspect all suspect vehicles and conduct warranted repairs free of charge.
Other Recalls Involving Defective Wiring
A number of recent vehicle recalls have resulted from defective electrical wiring.
Volvo in June recalled 600 SUVs for front-seat wiring problems that could prevent the front seat side impact airbag from deploying during a crash.
In July Fiat Chrysler recalled 660,000 SUVs because the wiring for the vanity lamp in the sun visor might short circuit and cause a fire.
Last year, Mitsubishi Motors North America recalled about 700 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SUVs with leather seats to fix a wiring routing problem.
Ford Motor Co. in 2011 recalled about 1.2 million vehicles over air bags that could deploy without warning because of a wire routing problem.
