Ford Recalls 432,000 Cars For Software Problems
Ford is recalling 432,000 Focus C-Max and Escape vehicles due to a software problem that could keep their engines running even after drivers try to shut them down.
According to an Associated Press news report, Ford officials say there is a defect in the body control module software in the vehicles as a result of which the engine could keep running after the key is turned to “off” and removed, or after the start/stop button is pressed to turn the engine off.
So far, Ford says no injuries or accidents have been linked to this issue.
The recall covers some model 2015 Focus cars, C-Max hybrids and Escape SUVs.
The Focus vehicles were made in Michigan as far back as June 2014, while the C-Maxes were made in Michigan starting in April 2014 and the Escapes were built in Louisville starting in April 2014.
When is a Recall Issued?
An auto safety recall becomes necessary when a motor vehicle or item of motor vehicle equipment does not comply with a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard or when there is a safety-related defect in the vehicle or equipment.
Federal law defines motor vehicle safety as “the performance of a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment in a way that protects the public against unreasonable risk of accidents occurring because of the design, construction, or performance of a motor vehicle, and against unreasonable risk of death or injury in an accident, and includes nonoperational safety of a motor vehicle.”
A defect may include any type of flaw in performance, construction, component or material used in a motor vehicle or part.
A safety defect that prompts a recall usually poses a risk to motor vehicle safety and exists in a group of vehicles of the same design or manufacture.
