Feds Probe Ford Fusion Vehicles for Brake Problems
Federal auto safety officials are investigating certain 2007-2009 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles after consumers have complained about poor braking behavior. According to a report on Motor Trend, a total of 141 complaints have been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The complaints state that the brake pedals tend to go soft after braking on a slippery or uneven surface where ABS is needed and that drivers have to use more force than usual to stop the vehicle.
Increase in Stopping Distances
Drivers have reported an unexpected increase in stopping distances and some say they haven’t been able to stop in time for red lights or stop signs. So, far three crashes have been reported in connection with these braking problems, but no injuries or fatalities. NHTSA is blaming the antilock braking system hydraulic control unit for the sudden loss in brake pedal pressure.
Some reports say the problem corrects itself, but could recur when the vehicle encounters another ABS type braking situation. Others say replacing the ABS hydraulic control unit has taken care of the problem. NHTSA is looking into the problem and the probe could eventually lead to a safety recall. If that happens, about 474,862 vehicles could be affected.
The Danger of Defective Brakes
Each year, a number of auto accidents occur as a result of defective brakes. Brake systems in vehicles are complex and could include a number of moving parts. When any one component fails, brakes may fail to work as intended. This could result in a vehicle malfunction and possibly a car crash. There may be a number of causes for defective brakes including faulty manufacturing, poor maintenance and improper installation.
When a vehicle’s brakes aren’t working properly, the driver may not be able to slow down or stop the vehicle. In some cases, malfunctioning brakes could cause the vehicle to jerk or stop unexpectedly. When the brakes pull to one side, a vehicle could even go off its lane or cross into oncoming traffic. Any one of these scenarios could result in a devastating accident and/or injury.
