FDA Warns Consumers About Asbestos Found in Claire’s Cosmetics

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has advised consumers not to use three Claire’s brand cosmetic products after tests have shown they contain asbestos. According to a CNN news report, the FDA has issued a safety alert on Claire’s Eye Shadows, Compact Powder and Contour Pallette after they all tested positive for the presence of tremolite asbestos. The agency also detected asbestos in a Justice product, which had already been recalled in 2017. These three Claire’s cosmetics products are not believed to be for sale, but consumers who have them at home are being advised to stop using them.

Claire’s sells makeup jewelry and accessories targeting teens, tweens and kids. The company has said it has already removed these three cosmetic items and any talc-based products from its stores. However, the company has taken issue with the FDA’s testing process saying that the tests were erroneous. A company statement said the FDA test reports have mischaracterized fibers in the product as asbestos.

The Danger of Asbestos in Cosmetics

However, the FDA released the test results while encouraging healthcare professionals and consumers who may have medical issues related to the Claire’s products to report them to the FDA’s adverse events reporting program. There are no laws currently in place that require companies to test their cosmetic products for safety. The FDA has limited authority to ensure the safety of cosmetic products and it cannot review these products before they go to market like they do for drugs.

The agency says it is working with cosmetics manufacturers to better understand how they are making sure their talc products are free of asbestos.
