Faulty Smoke Alarms & Carbon Monoxide Detectors Recalled
More than 1 million smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors were recalled because of a defect that could cause them to fail.
According to a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) alert, the Kidde smoke alarms and combination smoke detector/CO alarms are hard-wired and can fail following a power outage.
About 1.2 million of these defective alarms were sold in the United States and approximately 112,000 were sold in Canada. According to Kidde, the problem is in the devices’ programming code.
Affected Kidde Models
The recalled Kidde smoke alarm is a residential model manufactured between December 2013 and May 2014. The combination models were manufactured between October 2013 and May 2014.
All of the alarms included in the recall are the types that get connected directly to household wiring.
Two of the models have 10-year batteries sealed inside while one of the models uses replaceable AA backup batteries. The alarms included in the recall were made in China and were sold between January and July for between $30 and $50 at Home Depot, Menards, Amazon.com as well as other electronic supply stores and retailers.
Anyone who has these alarms or detectors in their home is asked to contact the manufacturer, Kidde, to get a free replacement.

The Danger of Defective Alarms
When smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors do not work the way they are supposed to work, the consequences can be devastating.
Burn injuries or even fatalities can occur as a result of structural fires or carbon monoxide leaks. Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because it is odorless.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide are not much different from flu symptoms, which can make it very challenging to detect.
It is crucial that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors be checked routinely to ensure that they are working properly. Make sure that batteries don’t need to be changed.
If you have any of these defective alarms or detectors in your home, please make sure that you return them and get a properly functioning device right away.
