Doctors Warn Textured Breast Implants Could Increase Risk of Rare Cancer
Doctors in Ireland are warning women that they are at risk for a rare form of immune system cancer if they have received a specific form of breast implant, such as the textured implants manufactured by Allergan. According to news reports, about 8,000 women who have been identified by the Health Service Executive in Ireland as having received textured breast implants, will get a letter informing them about this risk.
Allergan Implants and Increased Risks
The cancer is known as breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that BIA-ALCL is a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that is typically found in the scar tissue and fluid near the implant area, but can spread throughout the body. This is a rare type of cancer. The National Cancer Institute states that only 4.3 percent of cancers diagnosed in the United States are non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
A majority of the BIA-ALCL cases have been linked to implants that have a textured surface. These types of implants became popular for their ability to resist movement within the breast tissue. The most widely used brand of textured breast implants was Biocell by Allergan of which the FDA requested a voluntary recall. The FDA determined that the risk of BIA-ALCL is six times greater with Allergan’s Biocell products than with textured breast implants manufactured by others.
Out of the 573 cases of BIA-ALCL reported, 481 patients had implants manufactured by Allergan, which issued the recall in July 2019. Those who have received these implants should look out for symptoms of BIA-ALCL such as persistent pain or swelling in the implant area. This might not occur for years after the implants are placed. Some have also observed fluid collection and a thick capsule of scarring under the implant.
