Contigo Recalls 5.7 Million Kids’ Water Bottles for Choking Hazard
Nearly six months after issuing a product defect recall for 5.7 million kids’ water bottles because the spouts posed a potential choking hazard, the company is recalling the replacement lids for the same reason. According to a USA Today news report, Contigo issued a voluntary recall for its Contigo Kids Cleanable water bottles and replacement lids sent to consumers as part of the August 2019 recall.
Reports of the Spouts Detaching
The notice issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said consumers should stop using the recalled water bottles and the replacement lids right away and take them away from children. Consumers who received the replacement lids as part of the previous recall are being urged to contact Contigo for the new water bottle. According to the notice, the company has received 427 reports of the spout detaching including 27 spouts found in children’s mouths.
The base and cover of the clear silicone spout on all the affected bottles and replacement lids are black and the word “Contigo” is printed on the rim and along the front near the bottom of the water bottle. The bottle included in this recall comes in three sizes – 13-ounce, 14-ounce and 20-ounce. They were sold individually as well as in two and three packs in stores including Wal-Mart, Costco, Target and others nationwide and online April 2018 through Feb. 7 for between $9 and $24. The Danger of Choking
When a child is choking, it means that an object is stuck in the trachea or the airway. When this happens, air cannot flow normally into or out of the lungs. As a result, the child can’t breathe properly. Sometimes, an object can get into the trachea and completely block the airway. If that happens, the airflow that goes in and out of the lungs is blocked, and the brain could be deprived of oxygen as a result. This type of situation could prove to be life-threatening.
