Central California Woman Records Live Video of Sister’s Fatal Car Accident
An 18-year-old woman identified as Obdulia Sanchez was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving drunk in connection with a fatal crash, which killed her sister. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Times, officials say Sanchez recorded the gruesome crash and livestreamed it on Instagram.
California Highway Patrol officials said Sanchez was driving north of Los Banos when she swerved off the road and over-corrected her turn. She then veered across lanes and crashed into a wire fence. Her car rolled into a field and her 14-year-old sister, Jacqueline, was ejected from the vehicle. A second girl, also 14, was hospitalized after she suffered major trauma to her right leg.
The graphic video showed Sanchez as she recorded while behind the wheel of a Buick. Sanchez can be seen in the video singing and making hand gestures as music blasts. At one point she held up her middle finger for the camera. After the crash occurred, she could be seen panning the camera to her sister who was lying in the grassy field and appeared to be suffering major head injuries.
Sanchez then said: “My sister is dying…look…I love my sister to death.” She then kissed her sister’s face, shook her several times and told her to “wake up.” Then she said she killed her sister, but didn’t care. California Highway Patrol officials say they are aware of the video and are investigating it.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Jacqueline Garcia’s family for their tragic loss. Family members said she was looking forward to celebrating her 15th birthday or quinceanera.
Reckless and Negligent Driving
This story is an extreme example of the dangers of drunk driving. As California car accident attorneys who represent victims of drunk driving, we are outraged by this incident where a girl crashed the car carrying her younger sister and another teenager and allowed her sister to die from catastrophic injuries instead of getting her help. The most outrageous aspect of this incident is of course Garcia’s move to livestream her sister’s gruesome death on Instagram.
We hope justice is served in this case even if it may be a tragedy on all fronts for the family. We would also like to remind young people of the dangers of drunk driving or getting in a vehicle with someone who is under the influence.
