Carson Hit-and-Run Crash Seriously Injures Pedestrian
Miguel Villa Cabrera was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash early morning on June 20, 2013 in Carson. According to a report in The Daily Breeze, the driver of a recently sold black BMW 300i struck Cabrera who was walking in a marked crosswalk on Broadway south of Albertoni Street. Cabrera was hospitalized in serious condition, but he is expected to recover. Officials say the marked crosswalk had a flashing yellow warning light to draw attention to it. The BMW fled the scene, but a witness following the vehicle provided officials with the license plate number of 6MDH070. Police found that the car had been recently sold. They are still trying to find out who bought the car. Anyone with information is asked to contact Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies at 310-847-8380.
It is indeed fortunate that the pedestrian did not suffer life-threatening injuries. This incident could have been a lot worse. I wish Cabrera the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Pedestrian Accidents
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2010 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person died and 28 were injured due to pedestrian crashes in Carson. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 195 fatalities and 4,535 injuries were reported due to pedestrian accidents during the same year.
Violation of Laws
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the BMW, not only struck and seriously injured a pedestrian in a crosswalk, but left him lying on the roadway without stopping to help. Appalling! California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states that all motorists involved in an injury accident must stop and remain at the scene until authorities arrive. They must exchange pertinent information with other parties (insurance, driver’s license, contact information, etc.) and most importantly, render aid to the injured victims. California Vehicle Code 21950 (a) states that motorists must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians walking in marked or unmarked crosswalks.

Injured hit-and-run victims are also often left holding the bills and facing a number expenses without anyone to hold accountable for what happened to them. In such cases, victims would be well advised to retain the services of an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable. A knowledgeable car accident attorney will also advise victims about how their own car insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run crash or in a case where the at-fault party is uninsured or underinsured.
