California Man Sues Monsanto Over Roundup Weed Killer After Developing Cancer
A Northern California man has filed a lawsuit against Monsanto (now owned by Bayer) alleging that the company has known for many years that glyphosate, the active ingredient in its Roundup weed killer, can cause cancer. According to a report in the Redding Record Searchlight, the plaintiff, Fred Pulice, found out in 2018 that he had developed cancer in his lymphatic system called non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Pulice has joined dozens of others in California and across the country suing Monsanto over Roundup. The lawsuit also names Orchard Supply Hardware as a defendant because Pulice purchased the product from the store.
Thousands of Roundup Lawsuits Filed
Monsanto’s attorneys have consistently defended the company’s weed killer saying it is safe for humans to use. Roundup and glyphosate-based herbicides are still legal in the United States and are commonly available in hardware and home improvement stores. Bayer says studies have found Roundup and glyphosate to be safe, the International Agency for Research on Cancer has found strong evidence showing that its use could lead to cancer. Monsanto, now owned by Bayer, is facing more than 13,000 lawsuits with regard to this issue.
Some plaintiffs have sued with remarkable success. In May, an Alameda County jury awarded a couple $2 billion after they filed a lawsuit claiming that they became sick with cancer from using Roundup. That amount was later reduced to $86.7 million. The California Department of Pesticide Regulation states that glyphosate is one of the most common herbicides used in the state. According to safety advocates, Roundup has remained on store shelves for decades now not because it is safe to use, but because the manufacturer has developed a cozy relationship with regulators.
Holding the Manufacturer Accountable
