Boy Dies from Injuries Suffered in Violent Attack on Moreno Valley Middle School Campus

A 13-year-old boy only identified as “Diego,” has died a week after suffering serious injuries in an on-campus attach by two other students at a Moreno Valley middle school. According to a KABC news report, the boy was pronounced clinically dead the evening of Sept. 24. Parents of at the school have demanded answers from the school’s administration following this fatal bullying incident.
Two other students who were involved in the incident, which was recorded on video by a bystander, remained in custody after being arrested on suspicion of assault. They are also 13. Diego was a student at Landmark Middle School. Police were called to the school Sept. 16 when a fight broke out on campus. Video shows the teen being punched and falling into a concrete pillar. Diego was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Increasing Incidence of Bullying and Violence
The school’s parents say kids are being bullied and the school’s administration has not “done anything.” Parents also say they have requested school officials to change the rules and policies more stringent against bullying, but that there has been no response. School officials have said the incident is still under investigation.
These types of incidents are becoming increasingly common on school campuses in Southern California. According to The Orange County Register, in another incident that occurred after school on Sept. 26 at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, a seventh-grader was seriously injured and hospitalized. A 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of battery with intent to cause great bodily injury. School officials are still working to determine disciplinary action for the 14-year-old boy. The injured boy’s mother told CBS2 that her son suffered head fractures.
What Actions Can You Take?
No school should tolerate any form of bullying and abuse. If your child has told you that he or she is being bullied in school, be sure that you document everything. Find out about any threats that have been made toward your child, on and off-campus or online. When you have evidence of such a threat, contact the police.
Contact the school during hours of operation and make an appointment with the principal for a face-to-face meeting. Obtain a copy of the school’s anti-bullying policy to determine whether a bully violated school policy. Follow up with your child to see if the bullying stops. If the harassment continues, document it and file a Notice of Harassment.
